Home Buyers Tip | 10 Mistakes People Make When Buying a Home

When buying a home, make sure you ask for the assistance of a real estate agent.  You do not pay for their services and they are here to help.  We have come up with a list of mistakes that we have seen buyers make when purchasing a home:

  1. Wait too long to make an offer.  A good home will go quickly.
  2. Purchase a high priced item (car, etc) right before close.  Banks will pull an updated copy of your credit report closer to your closing date.  If there is any new credit purchases or a higher credit balance, it could cause you to loose your dream home.
  3. Settle for less than the best real estate agent.  You do not pay for your REALTOR, so make sure you find one that matches your personality and works the way you want them to.
  4. Aren’t honest about their money situation with their loan officer.  We hear too often that the buyers were not able to close on their new home because they didn’t tell their banker everything.  It’s important that your banker know every financial details.  Don’t try and hide anything from them.  You may have been able to do that in the past, but not any more.  And typically they will not find out about it till right before you are supposed to move.
  5. Think they know better than the professional representing them.
  6. Nitpick the process.  It is what it is and we are not going to change the rules overnight.  So, let your agent do what they need to do.  They will let you know when they need you.
  7. Seek information from another agent without revealing they’re working with someone else.  This actually puts the other agent into a pickle.  Anytime an agent hears that they are currently working with another real estate agent, we must go to our REALTOR ethics and push you to talk with your real estate agent.
  8. Think they can go it alone without a licensed REALTOR®.  Some can, but most cannot.  Why try it when it’s free to use one.
  9. Forget that there are no stupid questions.  Your real estate agent appreciates every question.  It helps us make sure we fully understand your wants and needs.
  10. Don’t realize their real estate agent is a person, too.  One thing we love about our career is to be helping others and we too get emotionally attached
