CENTURY 21 ProLink Hosts Successful Community Blood Drive for C21 Day of Giving
On Wednesday, July 23, CENTURY 21 ProLink proudly hosted its annual C21 Day of Giving by partnering with LifeServe Blood Center to organize a community blood drive. Held outside our downtown Sioux City office at 1114 4th Street, the LifeServe Bloodmobile welcomed donors from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with one mission in mind—to give the gift of life.
We are thrilled to share that this year’s blood drive saw an excellent turnout, with over 20 community members stepping up to donate. Each pint collected has the potential to save up to three lives, which means this event could positively impact 60 people in need of lifesaving blood transfusions across our region.
Why Blood Drives Matter
Blood cannot be manufactured; it must come from generous volunteers. Blood drives ensure a steady supply of blood for hospitals, trauma centers, cancer patients, premature babies, and those undergoing surgeries or experiencing chronic illnesses.
Summer months are especially critical, as donation rates typically decline due to travel, holidays, and school breaks, yet the demand for blood remains constant. Events like the C21 Day of Giving help bridge that gap and keep our local blood supply strong.
Understanding Blood Types and Their Importance
Every blood type plays a role, but some are more versatile—or rare—than others:
- O-negative is the universal donor. It can be given to anyone in emergencies when there’s no time to test for blood type. Only 7% of the population has it.
- O-positive is the most common blood type and is always in high demand.
- AB-positive is the universal recipient and can receive blood from any donor type.
- AB-negative is the rarest, found in less than 1% of the U.S. population.
Each time you donate, your blood is tested and categorized so it can be matched with patients in need, helping ensure the right blood goes to the right person.
Who Can Donate?
Most healthy individuals can donate blood, and the eligibility requirements are simpler than many realize:
- Must be at least 16 years old (with parental consent) or 17+ without
- Must weigh at least 110 pounds
- Should be in generally good health
- Should not have donated whole blood in the past 56 days
Temporary deferrals may apply for recent travel, medications, or illnesses. LifeServe staff are trained to guide donors through the process and ensure it is safe and comfortable from start to finish.
The Donation Process
The full blood donation process takes about 30–45 minutes, broken down into four steps:
- Registration & Health Screening: A quick check of your temperature, blood pressure, hemoglobin level, and a short health questionnaire.
- Donation: About one pint of blood is drawn while you relax in a comfortable chair.
- Recovery: Enjoy a snack and drink while your body starts to replenish.
- Community Impact: That pint of blood can help up to three different people.
Pint for Pint Challenge
In a fun twist, this year’s event included the launch of our “Pint for Pint Challenge.” Donors were encouraged to challenge other local businesses or offices to participate. The team with the most donors will receive a pint of beer on us—a lighthearted reward with a serious purpose: inspiring more people to give.
